Marianne Haseloff (PI/group lead)
The goal of my research is to understand the physical processes that govern the dynamics of ice sheets and glaciers, and to improve the representation of these processes in Earth system models. My research projects focus on identifying the main drivers of ice sheet change and deriving parametrizations of these processes suitable for continental-scale ice sheet models. I use both analytical and numerical methods to solve the mathematical problems that arise in the description of these processes. Biographical sketch and contact information here.
Postdocs

Tim Hill
Tim has been a postdoc in the group since September 2026. He did his PhD (Earth Sciences) at Simon Fraser University with Gwenn Flowers, his MSc (Applied Mathematics) with Christine Dow at the University of Waterloo, and has a BSc Mathematical Physics from the University of Waterloo. At UW–Madison, he works on a Physical and human dynamics around melting ice and sea level rise in a warming world, funded by UW’s Research Forward initiative.

Logan Mann
Logan has been a postdoc in the group since July 2026. He obtained his PhD (Engineering) from Dartmouth College, working with Colin Meyer, and his BSc (Earth and Atmospheric Science) from Georgia Tech. At UW–Madison, Logan is working on an Arête-funded project to improve estimates of sliding-law parameters in ice-sheet models via time-dependent inversions.
Graduate students

Jaela Allen
Jaela joined the group in 2025 as a PhD student. She has a BSc in Geology with a minor in Mathematics from Miami University, Ohio. She works on temperate ice and its role in ice stream dynamics.

Kathryn Ross
Kit joined the group in 2026 as a MSc student with a BA in Physics with Minors in Geoscience, Biology, and Mathematics from the University of Montana. Kit’s project investigates ice-ocean interactions that lead to the formation of subshelf melt terraces.

Alexandra Spies
Alex joined the group in 2026 as a PhD student. She has a BSc in Physics and Maths with a certificate in Slavic Studies from UW–Madison. She works on subglacial hydrology on soft beds, funded through NSF project 2520980.

Carson Moellering
Carson started his PhD in 2026 and is co-advised with Luke Zoet. He works on subglacial hydrology on soft beds, funded through NSF project 2520980. Prior to joining UW–Madison, Carson received his BSc in physics from Bates College.

Group Alumni

Kai Hu
Postdoc 2023-2025
Kai joined the group as a postdoctoral researcher studying the dynamics of the Lake Superior Lobe of the Laurentide ice sheet, which was a lake-terminating glacier subject to the same marine ice-sheet instability as modern day glaciers in the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. His project used a numerical ice sheet model to understand the chronology of retreat and re-advance of this lake-terminating glacier, which can be inferred from geophysical surveys. He went on to a postdoc with Natalya Gomez at McGill University.

Campbell Dunn
MSc student 2023-2025
Campbell’s MSc thesis investigated subglacial hydrology on deformable beds, specifically Ng channels.
Undergraduates
- Bethany Jarvis, 2025-2026 (joined as LASER student and continued after the program ended)
- Alexandra Spies, 2025-2026 (now graduate student in the group)
